Take the Next Step

Help us advocate for our kids! Your story matters. Together, we can join our voices to create greater equity and opportunity for children who learn differently.

On Wednesday, December 8, 2021, Julie Billiart Schools moderated a panel discussion with state legislators to discuss the future of the Autism and Jon Peterson scholarships. Julie Billiart Schools were joined by co-hosts Bridgeway Academy and the Rich Center for Autism, as well as passionate parent advocates who shared stories about why the scholarships are so impactful. Hear these stories, and learn more about the history, status, and growth of the programs, in the recorded panel discussion below. After watching, we urge you to write an email, send a letter, or call your local representative to share YOUR story. On the panel, State Senator Bob Peterson encouraged families and providers who benefit from these scholarships to speak up.

“We make better decisions when you talk to us. I’m a better legislator when people talk to me and tell me what their needs and concerns are.” - Sen. Bob Peterson

Tips for Contacting your Representative

  • Address your Senator by name. (You can search for the appropriate senator, here.)
  • Mention that you are a constituent and a parent of a child with special needs.
  • Share what school your child attends.
  • Share a personal story.(Our legislators want to hear how and why the scholarship funds affect your child's education.)
  • Share how the scholarships have impacted your life.(Consider sharing your child’s journey, unique needs, and growth.)
  • Avoid templates. (Authentic letters and emails are more impactful and attention-grabbing.)

Sample Messaging

Autism Parent: Thank you for your support of the increase to the Autism Scholarship that was passed in the last state operating budget.

JPSN Parent: I ask for you to keep children like mine in mind as you look towards the next operating budget. The budget past in June significantly increased the Autism Scholarship while leaving the Jon Peterson Special Needs Scholarship relatively unchanged.
