What makes Julie Billiart Schools different from other schools?

As a parent, you know that not all schools are alike. Primary, elementary, and even middle school years are incredibly important because they set the stage for not only what children learn - but how they learn.

JB students learn that they are supported by their teachers and peers. With a foundation of mutual trust, they feel comfortable asking questions and learning how to advocate for themselves. Surrounded by strategically designed classrooms, state-of-the-art assistive technology, and onsite therapies and activities, JB kids learn the tools to succeed in the classroom, with their peers, and at home.

Whether you’re seeking early intervention for your kindergartener, or you’re looking for the right environment for your older child who is lacking support from his or her current school, we invite you to visit us to see this approach in action.

Quick Facts

  • We focus on the whole child by addressing his or her academic, social, spiritual, and emotional needs.
  • Our individualized learning programs are adapted to meet the unique needs of our students, allowing them to become successful learners.
  • We foster self-esteem and confidence to reduce fear, build trust, and encourage our students to take academic risks and work beyond their comfort levels.
  • We offer onsite therapies to promote creative and engaging solutions that are delivered in a collaborative and consistent manner.
  • Our curriculum is centered around our students to encourage academic, social, emotional, spiritual, behavioral, and physical growth and development.

Student-Centered Learning

Since no two students learn the same way, our intervention specialists adapt their teaching methods to meet the needs of how each student learns best. Our low student/teacher ratios (8:1 maximum), flexible learning environment, and onsite therapists (speech, occupational, music, art, behavior), also contribute to our ability to meet each student’s unique learning needs.

Each grade is led by two certified intervention specialists who are with their students all day - including lunch and recess - to provide continuous learning support.

Experts In Special Education

As intervention specialists, our teachers have specific state licensing that qualifies them, more than general educators, to work in the field of special education. Many of our intervention specialists have master's degrees and all have practical experience differentiating academics and developing executive functioning in a learning environment.

What really sets our teaching staff apart from others is the unconditional compassion and understanding that they bring to the classroom every day. Many describe their roles at Julie Billiart Schools as a "calling" rather than a job. In 2020, Julie Billiart Schools were recognized as a Top Place to Work by the Plain Dealer and a “School of Excellence” by the National Association of Special Education Teachers.

A Special Place To Learn

Thoughtfully created classroom environments in all of our schools cater to a variety of learning needs. To maintain a low student to teacher ratio, our educational model is built on a "one class per grade" concept. Each grade level utilizes two classrooms: one for group learning, and the other, considered a resource room, is used for small group lessons.

All classrooms provide interactive display board technology and students in grades K-8 use Chromebooks for instruction and homework purposes. Sensory equipment including alternative seating options, standing desks, and noise-reducing headphones are available to students throughout the learning environments to assist with sensory processing disorders, posture, and proprioceptive input.

Onsite Therapies

Because our art, music, occupational, and speech/language therapies happen all under one roof, students benefit from a collaborative approach of service delivery. Onsite therapies are included as part of JB tuition and cut down on the amount of time our students and families spend traveling to and from therapy appointments outside of school hours.

This team approach also allows for continuity across all therapies. Intervention specialists and therapists are able to confer with one another to ensure that the proper therapies and session frequency are meeting the child's needs.

The Art of Interaction

Oftentimes we hear parents say "I just want my child to have friends and be happy." What seems like a simple concept for most can be quite challenging for many of our students. It's for this very reason that social thinking has become an integral part of our curriculum.

Intervention specialists and therapists work collaboratively to teach students how to interpret the thoughts, intentions, emotions, and actions of others in order to formulate appropriate responses for building meaningful friendships and social interactions.

JB Parent

open-quote Julie Billiart Schools gave us hope after our daughter was diagnosed with a learning disability. At JB, she thrived in the small classes, received necessary therapies, and developed the self-confidence to ask for help when she needed it. close-quote
