Take the Next Step

Julie Billiart School Akron, nestled in a charming residential neighborhood three miles west of downtown Akron, looks out over the scenic Schneider Park. In 2019, JB Akron reached its full academic model and now serves grades K-8. The thriving school is the first expansion campus of the Julie Billiart School Network. It was thoughtfully and prayerfully planned more than five years ago and is now bearing fruit.

JB Akron families enjoy the close-knit parent-teacher community that comes with being among the first families at a new school. The school includes a brand new gym floor, renovated classrooms, a new playground, new restrooms, a literacy center, a chapel, and a spacious art therapy room.

History of JB Akron

In 2014, Julie Billiart Schools leaders began carefully planning and evaluating an expansion of the award-winning JB Lyndhurst, which had been operating at capacity for years. Leaders felt called to build a new school that would offer the same transformative education and onsite therapies to children across Northeast Ohio. Extensive research, planning, and prayer revealed Akron, Ohio as the location for the second JB School.

In 2016, Julie Billiart Schools purchased the former Christ United Methodist Church on Mineola Avenue, next to St. Sebastian Parish. As a ministry of St. Sebastian Parish, Julie Billiart School Akron operates independently of the parish and their day school but has received much-appreciated guidance and direction from the church and its parishioners. St. Sebastian Parish provides support for monthly Mass and the sacraments while the schools often share resources and have organized group learning activities together.

With support from administration, the JB board, community partners, and volunteers worked hundreds of hours to prepare the new school for use. Every detail of the building was designed to create a safe and comfortable environment for kids with learning differences. In 2017, JB Akron opened to 14 students in grades K-2. It was, and still is, the only private elementary school in the area totally dedicated to students with unique learning needs.

Since opening in 2017, JB Akron has grown tremendously. Over the course of three years, it expanded from K-2 to K-8. Now at its full model, JB Akron can offer a highly personalized education to students in primary, elementary, and middle school. In 2020, the school celebrated its first graduate of eighth grade. The summer of 2020 brought many improvements to JB Akron including interior renovations, a new gym, a new playground, a literary center, a new art therapy room, and more. With just over 120 students, JB Akron is on track to meet the academic, social, and emotional needs of hundreds of students within the next few years.

JB Parent

open-quote Julie Billiart Schools gave us hope after our daughter was diagnosed with a learning disability. At JB, she thrived in the small classes, received necessary therapies, and developed the self-confidence to ask for help when she needed it. close-quote

JB Parent

open-quote They have all the resources necessary, specialized to the individual learning of each child, and the heart that goes with it. I don't think we would have stayed in Ohio if it wasn't for JB! close-quote

JB Parent

open-quote I don’t think I will ever be able to put into words how grateful I am that you saw my daughter for all that she is today and all that she is yet to become. close-quote
