Take the Next Step

Julie Billiart Schools offer a unique, whole-child education program for children in grades K-8.

Students are grouped into four different grade bands (K-2, 3-4, 5-6, and 7-8). Grade bands allow certified intervention specialists to break students into small groups based on ability. Students may join higher or lower grades within their bands based on their current needs and abilities for each subject.

Students enjoy an 8:1 student to teacher ratio in grades 5-6. Each grade has two dedicated intervention specialists. Each grade features a main classroom and a resource room so that kids have more room for one-on-one instructions, small group instruction, and brain breaks.

Therapies and Specials

Students in grades 5 and 6 receive both push-in and one-on-one or small group therapy as directed by their IEP. A speech therapist visits the class or lunch group each week to help kids practice conversation skills in a natural setting. 5-6 enjoys weekly prayer service and physical education, as well as music and art therapy.

Self Advocacy

By grade 6, some of the sensory accommodations common in JB’s lower grades are more subtle and age-appropriate. Instead of bouncy bands and trampolines, students in this grade band may ask to take a lap around the school to give their brain a break. Students learn to ask for what they need so that they can be successful in high school and beyond. By this point in a JB education, students understand how they learn and what supports or accommodations they need to facilitate that learning. They take ownership of the process. For example, a student may ask to take a test in a quiet area.

Recess and Lunch

All Julie Billiart Schools students enjoy two recesses each day. We’ve found that two short recesses help kids break up the day and become re-energized for classroom instruction. Grade bands often take recess and lunch as a group. Students bring their own lunch to school.

Instruction

Students in grades 5 and 6 still benefit from JB’s individualized approach, but begin to work in groups at a higher level. Science and social studies, in particular, introduce project-based work. Students practice taking a large assignment and stretching it out over the course of a quarter or even the year. Group projects help our students to work with others and practice critical thinking, problem-solving, and time management. Students come to expect class meetings once a week to set goals for the week ahead.

Grades 5 and 6 partake in 45 minutes a day of math instruction using the MyMath program. Number Worlds, an engaging, research-proven math intervention program is offered for students who need intervention to come up to grade-level. English Language Arts (ELA) is composed of reading, writing, phonics, and word-study instruction. ELA, which may be taught together or spaced out throughout the day, makes up about 150 minutes of instruction. Intervention specialists receive training in the Wilson Reading program to give students industry-leading instruction. Daily religion studies focus on not only Catholic teaching, but helping kids to become strong community members who embody the JB Way. Science and social studies take place for 60-90 minutes every other day.

Technology

All classrooms are equipped with ActivBoards and Chromebooks. At this grade level, students begin to carry their Chromebooks from class to class. Technology is more integrated into the school day. Grades 5 and 6 begin using Google Classroom rather than SeeSaw to take quizzes, access and submit assignments, create presentations, and display their work. Students learn how to use the Google Suite and email safely and securely. Intervention specialists integrate executive functioning with new technology to help students prioritize, color code, take notes, make comments, and develop better study skills.

JB Parent

open-quote Julie Billiart Schools gave us hope after our daughter was diagnosed with a learning disability. At JB, she thrived in the small classes, received necessary therapies, and developed the self-confidence to ask for help when she needed it. close-quote

JB Parent

open-quote They have all the resources necessary, specialized to the individual learning of each child, and the heart that goes with it. I don't think we would have stayed in Ohio if it wasn't for JB! close-quote
