[Akron, OH, September 13, 2023] What started as a student idea is coming to fruition for Julie Billiart School Akron (JB Akron) students. The students at JB Akron will be getting a basketball court compliments of Thompson Electric.

At the end of last school year, the graduating class and former Principal, Jason Wojnicz, came together to talk about the importance of diversity and inclusivity in the outside offerings at JB. Currently, JB Akron is set up with a large outdoor space and playground. Students suggested that a basketball court would offer more options for older students to be active, play collaboratively, and work on their social skills.

Thompson Electric Inc., a long-time supporter of JB Akron, conducted a business-wide fundraiser to support the students. Thompson Electric has been a staple in the Akron community for over 45 years. They are a family-owned and operated business that believes in giving back to the communities in which they live and work. They were instrumental in getting JB Akron launched in 2017 and have been long-time supporters of the JB mission and champions for all students.

“It’s so exciting to see this project come to life”, said Wojnicz. “It’s wonderful to see companies like Thompson Electric understanding, supporting, and believing in our students. We know how important it is for our students to see that people believe in them and value their ideas. We are forever grateful for the generosity of Thompson Electric, knowing that this type of contribution will support students for years to come.”

The installation and completion of the basketball court is on schedule to be completed by the end of this academic school year. JB plans to invite all students, and the alumni who started it all, back to visit and see their idea come to life. open-quote Julie Billiart Schools gave us hope after our daughter was diagnosed with a learning disability. At JB, she thrived in the small classes, received necessary therapies, and developed the self-confidence to ask for help when she needed it. close-quote
