JB Akron Parents Give Back for Teacher Appreciation Week

In the world of education, May can become a whirlwind of a month. As the end of the school year approaches, teachers work diligently to finish lesson plans, maintain expected class behaviors, complete testing and grading, and prepare to say goodbye to their students. Add distance learning to the mix, and May can fly by.

It’s more important than ever for us to pause, breathe, and thank the teachers of Julie Billiart Schools for their dedication and resilience this year. That’s exactly what JB Akron parents Rebecca Grigsby and Karla Rufus did earlier this month for Teacher Appreciation Week.

“Teachers are an important part of the formation of our children. I want them to know how much I appreciate them for all they do during the school day,” said Rufus. “They care for our children, teach them, and lovingly discipline them. Teacher appreciation week is a small way we can give back to them and show how grateful we are.”

Before COVID-19 hit, Grigsby and Rufus had a whole week planned for the teachers, including everything from breakfast, catered lunches, and many surprises that would unfold throughout the week. With distance learning, however, the two had to get creative and adjust their plans. They were still committed to making it extra special despite the circumstances.

“I hope the teachers see how important they are to their students,” said Rufus. “The love they show and words they say have left a big mark in the lives of each child.”

All JB Akron teachers received a gift bag filled with custom cookies, sunflower seeds, sparkling water, candy, and a Target gift card. Each student received a survey to complete. The survey contained fun questions for the children to answer about their teachers. On behalf of all JB Akron students and families, Rufus and Grigsby presented teachers with a thank you video featuring students, parents, and administrators.

“We chose JB because of the exceptional educators they hire,” said Grigsby. “These teachers go above and beyond every day for our kids and this is just one of the ways we can say thank you.”

Now, more than ever, parents have a renewed appreciation for all that teachers do for their children on a daily basis.

“We want them to know how much we love and miss them. Just because we can’t be together does not mean we can’t celebrate all they do,” said Grigsby.
