How Speech Therapy Services Help Students with Learning Disabilities

For students with unique learning needs, difficulty with sound production and articulation can lead to anxiety when answering questions, speaking in front of others in class and making friends. Issues with speech sound production can also make it difficult to be understood by others. Communication disorders such as stuttering affects a child’s ability to articulate smoothly often causing frustration, anxiety and even fear.

Articulation and literacy problems are identified in students when they have difficulty paying attention, expressing themselves, following directions, answering questions and understanding what they hear. Language problems make communication difficult for children and can also make reading and writing skills more difficult to develop.

Speech/Language therapy practices also address social communication abilities. For example, a child with autism may have trouble talking with or understanding others, making friends, navigating social situations, or understanding the feelings of those around them.

Diagnosing a Speech or Language Problem

Finding a therapeutic resource for speech disorders or language difficulties before your child starts school is important as early intervention can lead to effective diagnosis and treatment. Children with autism spectrum disorder often display speech and language challenges that affect their ability to understand, communicate verbally, and read and write as well.

However, in some cases, identification is not made until the child is school age.

Speech and Language Services at Julie Billiart Schools

Parents who have a student that learns differently understand the ins and outs of their child’s diagnosis – which may include developmental language delays or another speech or language challenge. Most of these parents have a history of working with speech-language pathologists and understand therapy is necessary for their child to grow and progress academically. However, parents new to Julie Billiart Schools are surprised to discover that we integrate onsite therapies their child can receive during the school day.

The goal of our speech and language services is to help your child do well in school and effectively communicate with others. For a diagnosed speech impairment or language delay, a student’s IEP will specify how often the child will receive speech therapy services and the duration of the services. Our speech/language pathologists work with all students in school. Students without a speech/language delay identified on the IEP instead participate in Lunch Bunch and Social Language Classes.

Going Beyond the IEP

We go above and beyond the demands of a student’s IEP to make sure there are speech and language services in place for them to thrive, and there are never any extra or hidden fees for speech therapy services at Julie Billiart Schools for any of our students.

JB speech-language pathologists work with all our students to identify and treat speech and language problems. These skills are important for helping with communication problems in school that can lead to learning delays or make it difficult for them to engage socially.

The speech/language pathologists at JB work one-on-one, in small groups and with whole classes. We work with students to build learning and communication skills, grow confidence and excel in academic and social settings. Our therapies are designed to work in tandem with any outside therapies the student might be receiving.

Find a Helpful Resource

Our team of experts work with parents and their children to identify and/or address speech or language issues. We will form a plan that works in tandem with any outside therapies and classroom learning.

In addition to our great team of speech-language pathologists and intervention specialists, our furry friends are also used as a unique tool alongside our speech therapies. Therapy dogs at JB provide incentive and reward for students with speech and language issues and have a history of being instrumental in the success of our students!
