Recognized for the vocational education component of Julie Billiart Schools’ Beyond Camp summer program, Director Allison Frazier MA, BCBA, COBA was ” . . . brimming with pride for the work done by our Beyond Camp staff. Vocational Education Supervisor, Danielle Merkel, in particular, did an incredible job with the five former JBS students that became our Counselors In Training (CIT)” Frazier said. The high school-aged CIT honed their self-advocacy, executive functioning and social skills while helping younger campers achieve individualized levels of growth and success in the same areas. Practical job skills were also learned by the CIT as they completed job applications, participated in a employment interviews and were required to independently submit requests for the accommodations necessary to perform their jobs. “We have found a way to provide meaningful vocational education to a population of high school students whose needs would otherwise go unserved by our community, “ said JBS Principal, Jodi Johnston. “ We strive to include our K-8 students in the community and have now included our former students in a way that will provide work skills for life-long independence and inclusion. “ she continued.
