Librarian Literacy Specialist

Julie Billiart Schools is a network of schools serving children grades K-8 with special learning challenges. Currently, we have campuses in Westlake, Lyndhurst, and Akron that offer unique learning environments for students with autism, ADD/ADHD, dyslexia, and social learning challenges. We are Catholic, non-public schools, that respect diverse faith traditions.

Duties and Responsibilities

The following is a list of primary duties and responsibilities. Other duties to be assigned as needed.   • Collect and catalog library resources including books, films, and publications
  • Assist people in locating reference and leisure reading material and educate patrons on how to search for information using the library database
  • Manage budgeting and planning
  • Oversee the check-out process for books and other resource materials
  • Develop library policies and procedures
  • Clarify the use of library amenities and provide information about library policies
  • Review and evaluate resource material, such as book reviews and catalogs, in order to select and order print, audiovisual, and electronic resources
  • Assemble and arrange display materials
  • Encourage the use of instructional technology to engage students and to improve learning, providing access to digital information resources for the entire learning community
  • Collaborate with teachers and students to design and teach engaging inquiry and learning experiences and assessments that incorporate multiple literacies and foster critical thinking
  • Assist with the development of a strong literacy culture across the School
  • Lead library lessons for all students K-8
  • Encourage and support individual reading programs aligned with the curriculum need and/or student interests
  • Disaggregate and analyze data to target instruction, enhance student learning and inform teacher practice
  • Administers assessments to target literacy strengths and weaknesses of students
  • Develops and delivers school-wide literacy initiatives
  • Creates a learning environment which stimulates learning and promotes excellence, where students are both challenged and supported
  • Motivates students to develop skills, attitudes, and knowledge needed to provide a good educational foundation, in accordance with each student’s ability
  • Uses a variety of teaching strategies, recognizing that students learn in a variety of ways: through independent learning, directed learning and group learning

Requirements

Education and Experience and Qualifications

Required:

  • Minimum of three years of recent experience as an Intervention Specialist or Special Education teacher.
  • Reading Endorsement
  • Knowledge of teaching methods, curriculum, and education programs designed for students with autism, ADD/ADHD, dyslexia and social learning challenges
  • Must be able to work effectively as a team member, demonstrate flexibility and desire to learn new skills and improve professional qualifications
  • Basic computer skills and ability to use required software
  • An understanding of the scope and the sequence of library and information literacy curriculum
  • Excellent oral, written and inter-personal communication skills to work with a diverse team, including the ability to proactively collaborate with students, faculty, and parents
  • Proven creative abilities and strong organizational and time management skills
  • Must remain current in professional practices and developments, information technologies, and educational research applicable to school library programs
  • Belief and commitment to the JB way and mission and to embracing the Sisters of Notre Dame’s philosophies and teachings
